As fall outWhile the massive streaming success of has viewers eagerly awaiting season two, another video game adaptation is on the way for Amazon Prime members. It looks like the company is moving from the weird and wild post-apocalyptic wasteland to the equally unconventional and unpredictable Japanese criminal underworld. If you're a fan of the game, you already know what I'm talking about, and if you're not, you'll soon find out, because Like a Dragon 7: Where Light and Darkness Go I'm really looking forward to it being made into a live-action movie!
Prime Video announced that the six-episode series will premiere in over 240 countries on October 25th. Actor Ryoma Takeuchi will play the lead role of Kazuma Kiryu. The story is said to be an original concept, and will be set between 1995 and 2005, depicting the lives and influences of the characters surrounding Kiryu. While Walton Goggins may not be playing a “complex villain,” even skeptics can safely say that this is a show you won't want to miss.
The Yakuza series combines non-stop action with WTF Japanese culture
at a glance, Yakuza The Yakuza games may seem like your standard beat 'em up games. The games certainly lean into that element, and are set in the gritty world of criminal gangs. But there's also the opportunity to delve deeper into niche and wild parts of Japanese culture that may be unknown to those living overseas. Side missions in the Yakuza games range from racing for money in pocket-sized RC cars to obtaining a real estate license and complying with Japan's complicated real estate laws.
It's also fair to say the series leans heavily into the “what the heck” side of Japanese culture. You'll see everything from clowns selling weapons to an office full of guys in diapers. Yakuza often takes strange turns without warning, but Like a Yakuza I'm trying to do the same thing by blending action with the weird, which to me is a very exciting prospect.
Kiryu Kazama is a tough guy with a sensitive side
At the center of Like a dragon Kiryu Kazuma is a legendary figure in the Yakuza world. Known as “The Dragon of Dojima,” he has earned a reputation as one of the toughest Yakuza in the Tojo Clan. Some Yakuza fear him, while others attempt to challenge him in an attempt to prove that the rumors of his strength are exaggerated. However, their attempts are often proven wrong.
At the same time, I personally would say that Kiryu is a sentimental soul and has a heart as big as his legendary status. Although he is an orphan, he opened an orphanage for children and has raised several children throughout the game. His life and conflicts with the Yakuza have forced him to be away from his children for long periods of time, but he always sends them money and makes sure they are well taken care of while he is away.
Ultimately, I'm just happy to see Kiryu back as a central character in Yakuza. Series creator Toshihiro Nagoshi has said in the past that the character's story was over. Of course, his subsequent appearances as a supporting character already disproved that notion, but it's great to see him in a lead role again. Hopefully, this remake will do the series justice while also adding something fresh to the mix.
