Many Michigan residents are planning summer vacations – road trips across the state, traveling to other states, or even going abroad – but officials are warning Michiganders to reconsider traveling to certain locations or to avoid travel altogether this travel season.
Michigan residents warned to avoid travel to nine locations
The U.S. State Department regularly reviews travel advisories based on a variety of risk factors, including health, terrorism, and civil unrest. Travel advisory levels may also change based on a variety of domestic factors, including increased civil unrest, policies affecting human rights, and heightened risk of unlawful detention. Travel advisory levels range from Level 1, where you should exercise normal caution, to Level 4, where you should not travel. According to U.S. News, crime, kidnapping, and terrorism are common risk factors associated with Level 4 countries. Travel to these locations may also pose a serious threat to Michigan residents who do not follow the warnings. The warnings for each level are as follows:
- Level 1– Take normal precautions
- Level 2– Act more cautiously
- Level 3– Rethinking travel
- Level 4– Do not travel
The State Department has rated about 25 countries as Level 3, advising people to “reconsider travel” to these destinations due to significant risks to safety and security. For Level 4 countries, the State Department said the U.S. government may have “limited ability” to intervene if a traveler's safety or security is at risk. There are currently 19 Level 4 countries on the list, and below are nine countries to avoid:
