As summer approaches and Florida continues to be a popular tourist destination, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV), Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) and public safety partners are urging travelers to make safety a top priority on the roads.
“Florida continues to be the number one state for domestic tourism and number two for international tourism,” said FLHSMV Executive Director Dave Kerner. “Before you travel, be sure your car is prepared and mentally prepared. Drive safely first and never drive if you have any concerns about your driving ability. We hope you come out in good spirits this summer.”
FHP Colonel Gary Howes II stressed that awareness is key to safety. “There will be increased traffic on the roads, so please be aware of your surroundings and be a courteous driver,” Howes said. “Call #FHP at (347) to report any drivers you suspect may be driving while intoxicated.”
Michelle Harris, Florida public relations director for AAA – Auto Club Group, recommends proactive vehicle maintenance. “Regularly inspect your tires, check your battery and brakes, replace worn wiper blades and top off your engine oil to keep your vehicle running smoothly,” says Harris.
The FLHSMV campaign focuses on several important vehicle maintenance checks.
- Wiper: Replace worn blades to ensure a clear view.
- Headlight: Check for any yellowing or cloudiness that may obstruct your vision.
- Tire pressure: Proper inflation is important to handle the extra weight of luggage.
- Tire Tread: Replace tires when the tread depth reaches 2/32 inch.
- temperature: Prolonged high temperatures can cause tires to puncture.
Florida summers are known for thunderstorms and unpredictable weather, and the campaign offers tips on how to deal with these conditions.
- Turn on the lights and wipers. Florida law requires that headlights be on when using windshield wipers.
- Slow down: Maintain a safe distance and avoid sudden maneuvers.
- Turn around and don't drown. Never drive through flooded areas.
- Beware of strong winds: Be especially careful around large vehicles.
- Inoperable traffic lights: Treat the intersection as a four-way stop.
- Pull over to the side of the road if necessary: If the weather becomes dangerous, wait in a safe place.
Florida's heat and humidity can be dangerous, especially for children and pets left in locked cars, so the campaign urges drivers to:
- Never leave children, vulnerable adults or pets alone Even if for a short period of time.
- Call 911 immediately If you see someone in trouble.
- Always check the back seat Before leaving the car.
