But while the average person must carefully weigh the cost of a trip against the rest of their budget, the highly wealthy can choose their destination without worrying about price.
If you've ever wondered where wealthy travelers vacation and how wealthy you need to be to enjoy it, then you've come to the right place.
Here are some of the most expensive travel destinations in the world and the typical net worth of people who vacation there.
Antarctica
Antarctica is one of the most expensive and remote places in the world, but traveling there requires a lot of money.
“Exploring this remote continent offers unparalleled adventure and untouched scenery, but logistical challenges and limited available locations mean costs skyrocket,” said Aaron Sutherland, founder of Jetsetter Lifestyle and Jetsetter, a luxury travel company that designs bespoke travel experiences for the wealthy.
Typical costs for a trip to Antarctica range from $15,000 to more than $100,000 per person for a two-week expedition, Sutherland said.

Underwater Hotel
Places like the Maldives, Tanzania, and the Bahamas have underwater hotels. Some of these hotels are a little more affordable, costing around $1,000, but some are for the very wealthy.
“A select few underwater hotels offer a truly unique experience but are very expensive due to their limited availability and high operating costs,” Sutherland said.
He said typical costs range from $5,000 to $20,000 per night.

Maldives
Another luxury destination that attracts the wealthy is the Maldives.
“Needless to say, the Maldives is a destination that is undoubtedly synonymous with luxury and exclusivity and for some clients it is a true status symbol destination,” said Chloe Esme, co-founder of Maldives travel specialist Amazing Escapes.
“In high season, the airport is dotted with private jets and celebrities become just another traveller.”
Esme added that room rates there are some of the most expensive in the world, costing more than $95,000 a night in some cases.
Luxury African Safari
While you may not need a net worth of over $10 million to go on a simple African safari, the luxury option is often out of reach for all but the wealthiest of people.
“Tailor-made safaris that include private guides, luxury lodges and exclusive wildlife encounters command a premium price,” Sutherland says.
A typical two-week safari trip costs anywhere from $20,000 to more than $100,000 per person.
Tracey Thomas, managing director of luxury travel company T Thomas Group, also noted that South Africa is one of the most expensive destinations frequented by the wealthy.
“Tented safari camps in the best reserves start at $2,500 per night for two people. Keep in mind that activities such as meals, game drives, entertainment and sundowners after long game drives are also included,” he said.
“But affluent tourists tend to opt for private game drive vehicles, hot air balloons, fine wines and spa treatments in tents, and the extra costs can add up quickly,” he continued.
“You also have to consider international and regional airfares. Flying first class from the U.S. to these destinations would cost more than $10,000 per person (probably twice that amount).”
And if you choose a place like Uganda or Rwanda for gorilla trekking, Thomas said you also need to consider permit costs, which can cost anywhere from $1,500 to $2,500 per person.
All in all, a bespoke trip to Africa can easily be expected to cost more than $100,000.
Private Island Experience
The ultra-rich and private islands are all but synonymous at this point, so it's not surprising that such a trip requires a high net worth.
“Renting an entire island for ultimate privacy and exclusivity is the height of luxury travel,” Sutherland added, with typical costs ranging from $100,000 to more than $1 million per week.

Space travel is reserved for the super-rich, which is understandable given its exorbitant starting price.
“Though it's still early days, venturing beyond Earth's atmosphere represents a new frontier in luxury travel,” Sutherland says, “and is becoming increasingly popular among affluent travelers due to its accessibility.”
The typical cost of a space trip varies widely, but is expected to range from about $450,000 per set to more than $50 million per seat.
