🏒 Stanley Cup Final: Oilers vs Panthers
Oilers and Panthers After Edmonton beat top-seeded Dallas and Florida beat top-seeded New York, they will meet in the Stanley Cup Final.
-
favorite: The Panthers (-125 at BetMGM) are in the finals for the second straight year (after the NHL's other Florida team made it three straight years) and are looking for their first championship.
-
Weak: The Oilers (+105) are making their first Finals appearance since 2006. They are one of just seven franchises to win five or more Stanley Cups, but their last title was 34 years ago.
Three storylines:
-
Refuel the plane: According to ESPN, the distance from Edmonton to Miami is 2,541 miles, making it the farthest distance between two cities in the history of a Stanley Cup Final, surpassing the distance from Vancouver to Boston (2,500 miles). With a flight time of about eight hours, jet lag could be a big factor if the series goes all the way to the end.
-
Can the Oilers break the curse? The last time a Canadian team won the Cup (the 1993 Canadiens), most of the NHL players weren't even born. Six have made it to the Finals since then (the 1994 Canucks, the 2004 Flames, the 2006 Oilers, the 2007 Senators, the 2011 Canucks and the 2021 Canadiens), but all six failed to win it.
-
McDavid moment: Connor McDavid is already one of the greatest hockey players of all time, but he has yet to play on the NHL's biggest stage. This is his chance to prove he's a winner and bring Lord Stanley home, while also becoming more well-known in America, where casual sports fans may not know him as well.
Future Outlook: Game 1 will be played Saturday night in Florida. (8 p.m. ET, ABC).
*New York's championship drought continues: The Rangers, Islanders, Knicks, Nets, Yankees, Mets, Giants and Jets have all gone a combined 100 consecutive seasons without a championship. The longest drought continues in New York's major sports history.

⚽️ The rich get richer
It was a great weekend for Real Madrid. The team won their 15th Champions League title on Saturday and officially signed Kylian Mbappe on Sunday.
The rich get richer: The Spanish giants have won six Champions League titles in the past 11 years – more than all but three other teams in European Cup history – and now they will have the chance to acquire arguably the best player in the world.
A couple made in heaven: Henry Bushnell of Yahoo Sports wrote that Mbappe's deal with Real Madrid is “the rare combination of superstar and superclub.”
This was the only logical ending to this story, even after Mbappé rejected Real Madrid in 2022. This time, he would not have seriously considered or negotiated with other clubs, as there was only one club that could match and amplify his ambition.
Madrid, of course, was the club that adorned the walls of his childhood bedroom. It's a romantic tale, and one that's surely told to distract from the more cynical criticism that this is a bit of a competitive excuse.
Mbappe spent seven seasons with PSG but never won the Champions League. Everyone understands that he's joining a team that always seems to win, like Kevin Durant with the Warriors. But the real story here is something more practical and rational: Their fit is perfect.
Real Madrid was the only club that could accommodate Mbappé's talent and fame – tactically, culturally and commercially. Lionel Messi and Neymar were bigger than PSG, but no club was bigger than Real Madrid.
Mbappe will be walking into a club with an infrastructure and a well-trained system accustomed to supporting and managing a player like him, and he will push the boundaries of the club's football, but in reality the club may make him more famous than the club makes him famous.
Speaking of Real Madrid superstars… Luka Doncic, who joined the club's youth academy at age 15 and led the senior team to the EuroLeague championship in 2018, will make his NBA Finals debut this week.
📆 June 3, 1989: Scully plays two roles
35 years ago today, Legendary sportscaster Vin Scully called the 23-inning game in two cities on the same day.*
A lot of baseball stuff: Scully started the day in St. Louis, where the Cardinals beat the Cubs in 10 innings on NBC's “Game of the Week.” He was then scheduled to fly to Houston to call the Dodgers-Astros game the next day. But once he landed and learned the game was going to extra innings, he headed straight to the Astrodome to call the final 13 innings of the 22-inning marathon.
Details for this day:
-
⚾️ 2006: Sammy Sosa was ejected and subsequently suspended for seven games after an umpire discovered a cork in his shattered bat. He said it was an honest mistake, which may well have been the case, but the incident has forever tarnished his reputation.
-
⛳️ year 2012: Tiger Woods tied Jack Nicklaus with 73 PGA Tour victories at the Memorial, which was founded by Nicklaus. Woods currently holds the all-time record for wins (82) tied with Sam Snead.
*The marathon continued. The next day, Scully returned to the Astrodome early in the morning for the final game of the afternoon between the Dodgers and Astros. Naturally, that game went 13 innings, giving Scully 36 innings in 29 hours.
