It takes a staff of dedicated journalists to bring you the news from central Indiana. In this new feature, The Indianapolis Star is introducing its journalists to readers. Or rather, we're having them introduce themselves. This week's guest is Nat Newell.
what is your profession?
Sports Editor
When did you join IndyStar?
October 2023
What is your favorite part of your job?
It's about working with a group of incredibly talented people to figure out how to deliver stories that people want to read, whether that be in topic or format. I've always enjoyed solving problems, and this job gives me the opportunity to do that.
Why journalism?
I didn’t hit a good fastball.
What are your favorite restaurants or hidden gems in the Indianapolis area?
It would be silly to answer this question because I am such a sucker for food.
What do you do to unwind from a stressful job?
I spend time with my kids when they let me, play vintage baseball, exercise, and read.
What is your favorite quote?
I have two.
Hugh Keogh used to say, “Races are not always won by the swift, battles are not always won by the strongest, but that's the way betting works.”
John Maynard Keynes is said to have said, “When the facts change, my mind changes. What would you do?”
What song do you unashamedly belt out in the car and why?
“Shake it off.” How could you not?
Do you prefer dogs or cats?
Cats. You have to work hard with cats. If you are nice to them, they will not only love you, but they will teach you that you can treat them better.
What's something people would be surprised to know about you?
I sew (it's been a while). When I make shorts, I cut out two pieces of fabric that don't look like shorts at all, but have two seams so when you turn them inside out they become shorts. It's like journalism; I can take some facts, some quotes, and my own thoughts and share something new with people.
What are you reading or streaming?
I usually alternate between some kind of detective series (I just finished Lucas Davenport and am looking for another one that might interest me) and some kind of sports book, depending on my mood.
How did you make your first dollar?
newspaper delivery.
