Metro will suspend service on the Red Line from Fort Totten to Glenmont for three months, starting June 1. During the closure, construction of a mezzanine level on the Purple Line and other work can take place. Affected stations include Glenmont, Wheaton, Forest Glen, Silver Spring and Tacoma.
Metro and regional transit agencies will provide a variety of transportation options while the Red Line is closed: Free shuttle buses will provide express service between Silver Spring and downtown Washington, DC from June 1 through August 31. Shuttle buses will run every four to eight minutes to ensure frequent connections to the closed stations.
During the work, the Glenmont, Wheaton, Forest Glen and Silver Spring stations will be closed. The Tacoma station will be closed from June 1 to June 29. During this time, Red Line trains will run every six minutes all day, including rush hour. After 9:30 pm, trains will return to their usual schedule of every 10 minutes.
More than seven miles of bus-only lanes will be added on Georgia Avenue between Glenmont and Silver Spring, with signal timing adjusted to prioritize buses and reduce shuttle travel times.
Metro will have information teams at affected stations ahead of the closures.
