“He's starting to understand himself a little bit more,” Tech coach Greg Sands said before the national tournament. “In golf, things aren't linear. You're learning, but it doesn't always show. But he's starting to see it — the maturity, how to see things a little differently on the golf course. Coach Vargas is doing a great job with him strategically. It's finally starting to click.”
Scott's result was the best of her career in three NCAA Championship appearances, and her eighth top-20 finish this year was a team-high.
Scott was the last Texas Tech player still swinging a club on Memorial Day, as the Red Raiders missed the 54-hole cut to 15 teams in Sunday's round, finishing 17th.Number 30 teams will participate.
The tournament saw 165 players enter: 81 completed four rounds, 65 completed three rounds before the 54-hole cut, and 19 were rotation players who played one or two rounds.
Georgia Tech sophomore Hiroshi Tai won the NCAA Individual Championship at three under par, beating five other competitors by one stroke.
The tournament continues on Tuesday with the top eight teams advancing to a match-play tournament.
Illinois finished 6 under par after 72 holes of stroke play, 16 strokes ahead of Vanderbilt, and is the top seed. Virginia and North Carolina are one stroke behind the Commodores. Other schools advancing to match play are Florida State, Auburn, Ohio State and Georgia Tech.
Scott started Monday with a birdie on the 596-yard 10th hole and another birdie on the 491-yard par-4 17th hole. Scott was bogey-free through 10 holes before bogeying consecutive holes on the second and third holes. He then birdied three of the final six holes before bogeying again on the seventh hole.
Scott will compete for the international team at the Arnold Palmer Cup in Lahinch, Ireland from July 5-7.
