With the busiest recruiting month of the year fast approaching, it's time to begin TLP's annual tradition of taking a position-by-position look at the recruiting landscape for the Virginia Tech football program.
As always, we start with the quarterback position. The Hokies already have one QB in the 2025 class but are looking to add a second. Meanwhile, QB recruiting for 2026 appears to still be in the early stages. However, things could change quickly in the 2025 cycle as things moved quickly to the point where they secured a commitment from Kelden Ryan last summer.
Let’s take a look at the Hokies and their quarterback recruiting situation.
2025: Kelden Ryan joins, but it's not over yet
Virginia Tech got its 2025 class up and running last summer when three-star quarterback Kelden Ryan, a Keller, Texas, recruit, made a surprise commitment to the Hokies in July. Ryan has never backed down since making his commitment and has proven to be a cornerstone for Virginia Tech in this class.
Standing 6'2″, Ryan has the speed to overwhelm college defenses and fits the dual-threat mold that the Hokies clearly want in a quarterback. He also continues to grow, completing 70.8% of his passes for 2,110 yards and 19 touchdowns against seven interceptions. Additionally, he rushed for 786 yards and 12 touchdowns for a very good average of 6.1 yards per carry.
Because Ryan has no direct ties to Virginia and is from faraway Texas, some have questioned whether Tech would be able to maintain his acceptance, but despite the distance, Ryan has visited the school multiple times in 2024 and is scheduled to be on campus for an official visit June 21-23. Despite the offers from other schools, Ryan has shown no signs of wavering on his acceptance.
At this point, it's hard to imagine Ryan not signing with the Hokies.
Tech is also looking to add a second quarterback to the class of 2025. This isn't surprising considering the Hokies currently projected to have just three scholarship quarterbacks in 2025: Kyron Draughns, Pop Watson and Davi Belfort.
