The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation emphasizes seat belt laws and restricts drunk driving.
PENNSYLVANIA, USA — Memorial Day travel is underway in Pennsylvania, and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is focusing on road safety at a time when record numbers of Americans are expected to take to the roads.
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is emphasizing seat belt requirements over the weekend, and the Pennsylvania Toll Road Commission expects about 2.9 million vehicles to be on the roads over the busy Memorial Day weekend, a 1.5 percent increase from last year.
“Right now we're in the midst of a 'fasten your seat belt or get a ticket' enforcement effort, which means they're watching to see if you're wearing your seat belt,” said Pennsylvania Department of Transportation spokeswoman Fritzi Schreffler. “People may not think about it much, but seat belts are your first line of defense to prevent serious injury or death in a crash.”
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation also has a focus on drunk driving, and police say they will be keeping an eye out for it throughout the weekend.
“A lot of people will be out and about,” Schreffler said, “some will be driving long distances to see family, some will be spending time with family and friends and drinking more than they should. So I want people to know that state and local law enforcement will be out and about all weekend, looking for people, especially those driving while intoxicated.”
