This weekend marks the unofficial start of the summer travel season. Some people will be traveling over Memorial Day weekend, while others will be staying local. “I'm going to visit a friend who lives outside of Fayetteville,” Springdale resident Therese Moreno said. “It's about a 20-minute drive.” At XNA, the summer travel season is already in full swing. “We're starting to see a little bit of bustle throughout the terminals, and I imagine it's going to get busier as the summer continues,” said Olivia Tyler, public relations manager for XNA. XNA said it just recorded its highest number of air travelers ever in 2023. “Right now, every month of 2024 is exceeding 2023 levels and even pre-pandemic levels,” Tyler said. For those who don't travel far over the holiday weekend, that doesn't mean they won't travel far later in the summer. “Yeah, I'm going to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and I have a layover in Dallas,” Moreno said. Remember to be patient as crowded airports are expected. “Travel seems to be getting worse,” Moreno said. “You know, there are a lot of people and the layovers are too long,” he said. XNA said travelers should expect longer than usual lines at security checkpoints this summer.
