Lloyd's Register (LR) has issued an Approval in Principle (AiP) to CMB.TECH and Damen for their hydrogen solution to be installed on board four new Damen ASD tugs.
The dual fuel hydrogen ASD tug 2812 FF-H2 with 80 tonnes bollard pull meets the most stringent IMO Tier III and EU Stage V standards. The vessel will be equipped with four high speed dual fuel hydrogen engines designed to minimise NOx.X and CO2 The tugs will also be fitted with stricter emission standards and will be equipped with a modular storage system for compressed hydrogen, stored safely beneath the hull. Each tug can carry up to 16 hydrogen bottles, for a total storage capacity of 736 kg of pressurised hydrogen at 350 bar.
The tugs will run primarily on hydrogen, but can switch to conventional fuels if hydrogen is not available, and can also run on 100% conventional fuel if required.3 The fuel is retained.
Damen and CMB.TECH have previously cooperated on the development of a series of Commissioning Service Operation Vessels (CSOVs), powered by dual-fuel hydrogen generator sets, the so-called Elevation series, which Damen is building for CMB.TECH subsidiary Windcat.
Vincent Mars – Damen’s Benelux regional sales manager said: “We are delighted to be working with Damen on this project. “We are pleased to be working with CMB.TECH again. Our two family-owned companies share the same long-term vision and commitment to the marine energy transition. We look forward to continuing our collaboration and developing next steps to make our ports, and our world, a greener place.”
Alexander Savaris – CMB.TECH's CEO said: “This contract marks another very important step in the development of our hydrogen-fuelled vessel portfolio. ASD tugs are the ideal asset to start the decarbonization of port operations. Our hydrogen tugs will enable all ports around the world to reduce their carbon emissions and create demand for green hydrogen production.”
Andy McKellan – Lloyd's Register's Chief Commercial Officer said: “CMB.TECH's AiP dual fuel hydrogen technology is a cost-effective decarbonisation solution for tugs, providing dual fuel hydrogen propulsion for Damen's new ASD tugs, significantly reducing the vessel's emissions profile. Lloyd's Register congratulates Damen and CMB.TECH on the successful delivery of this innovative design and will continue to provide classification and advisory services to help drive the maritime energy transition.”
The collaboration and AiP were commemorated in a ceremony held at Al Bawardi Damen in Sharjah on May 23 during the 27th International Tug & Salvage (ITS) Convention in Dubai.
