TROY – Last Saturday, Frewsburg sisters Jadyn Trocchi and Tegan Trocchi combined for 51 points.
Duanesburg wasn't going to let that happen Thursday.
A trip to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association title game is not at stake.
Siena College student Alison O'Hanlon scored 21 points and the Eagles held the Trochis to 14 points in the first Class C semifinal game Thursday at Hudson Valley Community College's McDonough Sports Complex. The championship team defeated the Bears 54-51.
“This is a senior-focused team,” Duanesburg head coach Chris Herron said of the Eagles. “They had a plan they wanted to follow and nothing was going to get in the way of that.”
The loss ended Frewsburg's season at 21-4, giving the program the Section 6 championship and its first Far West Regional title.
“They’re a bunch of seniors that have been here before,” Frewsburg head coach Sierra Bieber said of the Eagles. “We have never been here in the history of the school. We have just gained a little bit of experience. We will tick the two boxes for him at the end next year to achieve our ultimate goal. What should I do?”
Duanesburg will face Section 4 Moravia, which defeated Section 1 Tuckahoe 54-42 in Thursday's second semifinal, for its first state title today at 5:15 p.m.
“Enjoy this moment,” Herron said. “You can't miss a moment, but it's not over yet.”
The Eagles led 48-39 against the Bears entering the fourth quarter before Frewsburg made a comeback.
Junior Eva Jimerson started the period with a bucket, and after her twin sister Tatum Jimerson made a charge, sophomore Avery Harvey, who scored a career-high 15 points, scored off contact for the Bears. pulled within 5 points.
“I don't think they were ready for her. At first they kept her a little too small,” Bieber said of Harvey's performance. … That created another chance for us to score. … She was huge for us. ”
Tatum Jimerson then hit a 3-pointer and Harvey scored again to tie the game at 48-all.
“We said it was going to be a run game. … We knew we could score right away,” Bieber said. “…I thought I could escape, and I did. We were right back on track.”
But Duanesburg, which reached the state finals two years ago and has five seniors on its roster, answered right away.
One of those seniors, Hannah Mulhern, scored on consecutive possessions, giving the Eagles a 52-48 lead midway through the quarter.
“This team was going to run away. This team can score a ton. We just have to get through it and get some back,” Herron said. “Hannah went to the basket a few times and made some big layups at the end.”
Mulhearn scored again during a seven-inning scoreless game against Frewsburg, and Bears freshman Jaydyn Trocchi made a 3-point play with 1:02 left to make it 54-51.
Frewsburg then continued to play defense for 34 seconds of the shot clock before committing a foul that gave Duanesburg new possession with 22.9 seconds left. However, the Eagles turned the ball over on the ensuing inbounds play, giving Frewsburg a chance to tie the game with 20 seconds left.
“Eva played great defense all night. She was their best player in a long time,” Bieber said. “Eva fought all night and she came up with a great play at the end.”
After a timeout, a rushed 3-point shot missed, but Harvey grabbed the offensive rebound and gave the Bears one last chance.
Junior Tegan Trocchi, who made two 3-pointers early in the game, was the target of her final shot, but she was covered and passed by her sister Jadyn, and her shot from the top of the arc hit the buzzer. was slightly removed. .
“Out of the timeout, we created a play that drew attention to either Tegan or Jadyn. … We went to the second reverse option,” Bieber said. “…If you want one of those two girls to take a 3-point shot to win the game, I'll take it any time.'' It just didn't fall. It happens. “
“I just have to take my hat off to Frewsburg. Great team, great coach,” Herron said. “I’m telling you, they’ll be here again next year.”
