Memorial Day weekend means more drivers on the roads. The Alabama Department of Transportation has issued several precautions for those planning to travel.
As always, be prepared for increased traffic and plan your travel time to ensure you reach your destination safely.
ALDOT is doing its part by suspending temporary lane closures on all interstates from noon on Friday, May 24th until midnight on Monday, May 27th.
And don't forget that Alabama has a new hands-free cell phone law that goes into effect June 1. While you won't be fined for driving with your phone in your hand this weekend, now's a great time to kick the habit.
The new law includes: You cannot hold your cell phone while driving. But that doesn't mean you can't use your phone. All you have to do is use hands-free technology like Bluetooth or a device holder in your car. You can't tap your phone. That's why text-to-speech is important.
If you need to do something that requires you to type or swipe while holding your phone, pull over and park in a safe place.
ALDOT Holiday Travel Tips:
- Avoid distractions – this includes your cell phone
- Obey the speed limit — speeding is the leading cause of fatal accidents in Alabama
- Buckle up — seat belts save lives and reduce the risk of serious injury in a crash
- Plan your route in advance — ALGO Traffic can help. Available as a website or a downloadable app.
