Artificial intelligence (AI) is dominating technology headlines as organizations seek to leverage technology to improve efficiency and support key areas such as customer service and cybersecurity.
For years, enterprises have been applying machine learning (ML) to baseline normal operating environments and identify malicious activity and benign anomalies. Generative AI is currently gaining traction, leading to increased discussion about how this technology can be used to improve threat intelligence, workflows, and incident response. At the same time, there are some concerns about the integrity of the AI output. There are also questions about malicious actors using AI as attack weapons.
Research on AI and Cybersecurity
The Cloud Security Alliance and Google Cloud surveyed 2,486 IT professionals about the use of AI in cybersecurity. Most, 63%, believe AI can help improve threat detection and mitigation. That said, there is some degree of caution and concern, especially around AI technology falling into the wrong hands. Around 31% believe AI will equally aid businesses and the cybercriminals trying to breach them. Additionally, 25% believe bad actors will gain more from AI than the organizations they attack.
Top AI concerns include data quality issues (38%) that can hinder the accuracy of data output. Almost a third (30%) said they expect AI to enhance their cybersecurity skillsets. Around 28% expect AI to further support them in their roles. A further 24% believe they will leverage AI to automate some of their job functions. Only 12% are concerned about AI replacing workers. Half are concerned about over-reliance on AI and stress the need to balance technology with human experience.
Knowledge is out of balance
There is a lack of balance in AI knowledge among employees. While his 52% of all executives boast deep familiarity with AI, only his 11% of rank-and-file staff can make such a statement. Most (74%) trust leadership to make constructive decisions with AI.
The mandate for AI definitely comes from the top: Some 82% say AI projects are generated at the C-suite level.
