Myrtle Beach is participating in National Travel and Tourism Week, highlighting the significant economic impact of $11.95 billion in visitor spending and strong travel demand forecasts for summer 2024.
Myrtle Beach, South Carolina – Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce (MBACC) and Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) will commemorate this by participating in tourist destinations across the state and country from May 19th to 25th. - The region receives 17.6 million total visitors, two-thirds of whom are repeat visitors.
- Total direct visitor spending and impact was $11.95 billion, with $174 million coming from sports tourism.
- Total retail sales in Horry County is $16.4 billion
- Total passenger capacity at Myrtle Beach International Airport: 3.36 million
- Spending by travelers from outside the U.S. increased by 21% to $38.9 million
- $32 million came from the lodging tax, $45.7 million from the tourism development fee, and $58.5 million from the hospitality tax.
- Every dollar invested in tourism advertising generates $167 in direct visitor spending and an additional $22 in local tax revenue.
The Myrtle Beach area's travel demand forecast for summer 2024 is expected to exceed pre-pandemic levels, similar to 2023, according to the CVB. This prediction is supported by national indicators such as TripAdvisor's 2024 Summer Travel Index. 95% of US respondents plan to travel as much (51%) or more (44%) than they did last summer.
The index, released May 14, ranked Myrtle Beach as the top domestic summer destination for American travelers, ranking second behind Las Vegas. Rounding out the top 10 are Orlando, Honolulu, New York City, Chicago, Key West, Ocean City, San Diego, and Boston.
Emphasizing the important role of travel in Myrtle Beach, the City Council declared May 19-25 as Myrtle Beach Travel and Tourism Week.
