Gov. Jim Pillen said he was disappointed in Nebraska State Athletic Director Trev Alberts' sudden decision to take the same job at Texas A&M and told the university's Board of Regents on Thursday that he would fill the vacant leadership position. He urged them to act quickly to replenish supplies.
Former Regent Pillen, who played for the Cornhuskers from 1976 to 1978, issued a statement calling for action less than 24 hours after Alberts' announcement.
“I am extremely disappointed that Trev Alberts decided to resign so soon after reiterating his commitment to Nebraska, but I cannot and will not fully understand why,” the governor said in a statement. said. “We know that the time to reflect on the failures of university leadership that led to his decision will come later. The time to act is now.”
Alberts signed a contract extension until 2031 four months ago. His annual base salary this year is $1.7 million, and provisions in his new contract allow him to be adjusted as needed to keep him among the top three highest-paid athletic directors in the Big Ten. It was promised.
Terms of the deal with Texas A&M were not announced.
Alberts did not respond to requests for comment. In a recent interview, he expressed frustration with the regents' failure to appoint a replacement for Ted Carter, who was appointed Ohio president last August.
Alberts has often praised Carter for his leadership, helping to hire Matt Rhule as head football coach in 2022, and for working on the $450 million renovation of Memorial Stadium. did. Mr. Alberts broke with tradition and reported directly to Mr. Carter rather than to the provost.
“It has been 206 days since Ted Carter announced his resignation from office,” Pillen said. “It is unacceptable that the university's elected leaders have failed to appoint permanent leaders during this time. It is imperative that we take immediate and decisive action to end this uncertainty. They are overdue. “We should support Interim Chancellor Chris Kabrec's efforts to immediately appoint a new leader instead of a permanent athletic director.” ”
