MIAMI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, Fla. (WSVN) – With the summer travel season just around the corner and airports expecting an increase in passengers, airport officials would like to share some travel tips.
Travelers like David Allen are starting to think about summer vacations.
“I have a lot of family on the East Coast, so New York might be fun, but somewhere in the Caribbean or the Bahamas might also be nice,” Allen said.
Millions of Americans are expected to pack up and leave this Memorial Day weekend. Brad Sommer is traveling to Israel.
“I have a child graduating from medical school there. A good friend's wedding should be a lot of fun,” he said.
According to the American Automobile Association, this year's air travel is the biggest increase since 2005, so it's a good idea to start packing and making plans now.
On Wednesday, TSA officials displayed some of the items handed over over the years at the security checkpoint at Miami International Airport.
Some things clearly should have been left at home, others not so obvious.
“This is an issue that people don't pay much attention to. It's called the credit card knife,” said Mark Howell, a regional spokesman for the Transportation Security Administration.
Howell warns travelers to be wary of guns when going through security.
“The number of guns year-to-date is more than double what it was last year,” he said.
The best packing hack for travelers is to start with an empty bag, so it's no surprise when you arrive at the TSA security checkpoint.
Long security lines have been an issue in the past, especially on holiday weekends, but MIA has added staff to prepare for the increase in travellers, but we need your help to keep everything moving forward.
A simple rule of thumb is to “get to the airport two hours early,” Howell said.
Whether you're staying in the U.S. or heading overseas, stay safe and travel smart.
