First rumored over a year ago, the Tomb Raider series has been officially announced. On the heels of the hit show Fallout, Prime Video has officially announced plans for a new series based on the Tomb Raider games.
The new series will be written and produced by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, creator of the comedy series Fleabag and original showrunner and head writer of Killing Eve. She is also an actor, appearing as the voice of her L3-37 in films and television shows such as Indiana Jones and the Dial and Solo: A Star Wars Story.
For now, it remains a mystery as to who will replace Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft in the series.
“With great IP, the possibilities are endless,” said Christoph Hartmann, vice president of Amazon Games. “The richness and depth of fiction allows Prime Video's Tomb Raider series and Amazon Games' video games to tell separate stories about Lara Croft's adventures. Crystal Dynamics brings this iconic series to Amazon. We are honored to have been commissioned and look forward to seeing where this collaboration takes us.”
That's certainly the kind of thing you'd say in a press release from a company with little information, and I personally wouldn't call Tomb Raider's story rich or deep. However, the success of the Fallout series has helped Amazon clear up some of that doubt. While Fallout is inherently a more interesting setting, Tomb Raider's looser constraints, which are less tightly bound to the demands emanating from the game's world and its canons, give Waller-Bridge and company room to be creatively flexible. should be given more.
There's currently no indication as to when we'll find out how this bit of speculation holds out. Amazon says only that the film will be available exclusively on Prime Video (no surprise there) and says, “We look forward to sharing more about both projects.” they progress. ” This reference to “both projects” reminds us that Amazon Games is also publishing the next Tomb Raider game. The game is a “single-player, story-driven adventure that adds a new chapter to Lara Croft's story in the Tomb Raider series.” There is also no announcement regarding when it will be released.
