There's nothing like a video game to escape the everyday fears and anxieties of modern life. Having grown up with the prosperity of the console era, core memories of classic gaming systems are ingrained in my nostalgia-hungry lizard brain. Even now, as an anxious and depressed adult, those memories remain as little pockets of serotonin that are about to pop, like a pimple that is about to pop up at any moment. Have these startup sounds withstood the test of time, or has my old pessimism ruined me? Here's a ranking of all console startup sounds by how well they cure my depression.
#17 WiiU

Who at Nintendo thought this was a good idea? How could a combination of undersea sonar and sound connected to a Bluetooth speaker give you that slight excitement of playing video games? I'm here to put on a , not looking for Red October.
#16 Gameboy/Gameboy Color
Listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ixuNEGDIuIo
too short! I wouldn't care if this was a revolutionary handheld console that spawned a generation of portable gamers on the go. Requires at least two easily confused notes. Super mario The sound of collecting coins.
#15 PSP
Watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ulb6Ic4517g
PSP needs to be prepared. Are you a “beep beep boop boop” console type person, or are you more of a playful acoustic guitar person? Your indecision scares and confuses me.
#14 Xbox
Listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LsCYkWCA5KE
Jesus Christ! What the hell happened? The Xbox's startup sound feels more like a failed experiment than a video game console. Is this what turned Norman Osborn into the Green Goblin and it lives inside my Xbox? Oh no. If you hear that, you won't be able to sleep well for several weeks.
#13 PlayStation 4
Listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gKcaUIMz0J8
The older I get, the less nostalgic I feel for recent console startups. The no-frills sound of the PlayStation 4 lends an “all family here” feel to your company. When I start up my PS4, I want it to be as dazzling as it is when I punch in on my device, unpatronized. the last of us shift.
#12 Nintendo Wii
Listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3lJ6HUTCt1U
The Wii's startup sound, a total of 180 from Nintendo's previous consoles, reminds me of my own death. A purgatory of video game consoles, the Wii's minimalist, white-on-white aesthetic assumes that an omniscient observer is watching me swing a tiny stick around my living room.
#11 PlayStation 2
Listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y9Ln-qyvX_I
You have fallen into a dimension of rising rectangles and eerie purple fog. PS2's opening sounds and animations are more reminiscent of a 5-gum commercial than a video game console. The overwhelming synth melody may remind you of the vast nothingness that awaits you after death, but the punctuation marks hissing sound It's kind of reassuring at the end. Death is near, but it has not yet arrived.Let's play jak and daxter!
#10 Xbox 360
Listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zIuNrejw4EA
For an entire generation of nostalgia-hungry gamers, Xbox 360 sound isn't the console's startup sound; it's the sound they have to experience before. halo 3 begins.
#9 PlayStation 3
Listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ho4z2_22pU4
The full orchestral welcome that the PS3 brings feels a bit out of place. We came to play red dead redemption I won't meet the queen. Listening to classical music before playing a video game will simply remind you that you made productive and sophisticated choices before settling on the game. ratchet & crank.
#8Xbox One
Listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LZuN3Wse1DU
It's short, sweet, and to the point. Unfortunately Microsoft probably fired the person who created this.
#7 Game Boy Advance
Listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_ZD3FxMcvQ
The arpeggio of musical notes that begins the Game Boy Advance's opening screen initially appears to be the same blueprint as its predecessor, but a twinkle at the end heightens the overall composition. Outlandish endings lift my spirits more than most relationships. It was like the Game Boy winked at me.
#6 PlayStation 5
Listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_6M31khHTzk
I'm not depressed about hearing the PS5's startup sound, but does it make up for the sound itself, or am I just happy playing with a shiny new toy? The confetti-like particles flying around will feel like a surprise birthday party your friends will never remember.
#5 Sega Dreamcast
Watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sOsw-Au9JCo
The Dreamcast's quiet startup puts my mind at ease. Unfortunately, that zen calm is shattered by the next sound you hear: “House of the Dead.”
#4 Nintendo Switch
Listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tmRNnOMdOvU
The echoing sound that starts the Switch affects me like a trigger phrase that wakes up a sleeper agent. Who has time to be depressed when the click of the Joy-Cons stimulates my little monkey brain like an 8th grade fidget spinner?
#3 Sega Genesis
Listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YxOEPBO4OqA
“Seeegaaa” The simplicity of the heavenly chorus that begins this console makes me think of it as the angels sing as they approach the Pearly Gates.
#2 GameCube
Listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ksZh-FHuKpk
I'm sure that what Nintendo intended for the GameCube's startup sound was a whimsical sonic flourish, but in reality it sounds more like a very anxious cat being dropped on a piano. Thankfully, just remembering that image can help you forget about your life for a little while.
#1 PlayStation
Listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qg0BvV0HE4s
amazing. Awe-inspiring. The PlaySation startup sound gives me purpose. It's there for me through good days and bad, triumphantly welcoming me into tomorrow's cyberspace (circa 1995).
