Make it like a tree…and stay there?
Trophy hunting in video games is one of those things that you have to be completely dedicated to or not worry about at all. Those in the latter group will probably let out a mildly enthusiastic “huh” or perhaps even “how about that” when an unexpected trophy appears.
Some of the trophies on this list are so arcane that it takes you a while to figure out how to get them, some have insanely difficult requirements, and others literally tell you straight up that it will take years to get them. A game like this at this point would cough it up.
Either way, these trophies will have an important place in your gaming cabinet, and rightly so.
As any performance data aggregator will tell you, and as I discovered by researching this list, trophies are no match for the most determined hunter, so this list does not require many years to earn. Think of it as packed with trophies that will cost you a lot of money. Hunters are a different species, so I'm honestly a little scared.
8. Lower of the Row – Crypt of the Necrodancer
If you're a little disappointed that this list doesn't include trophies that haven't been earned for years, this entry should explain why.
Crypt of the Necrodancer is an engaging roguelike with a focus on rhythm, where you move to the beat and defeat your enemies before they take you down. It sounds cute, but it's actually very difficult. That's before you even consider trying to earn the Platinum Trophy yourself. This is a herculean effort that may be one of the toughest challenges ever posed by a video game, especially because of the sneaky challenge set by the lowest gold trophy.
This trophy requires players to complete the entire run using all characters without picking up any non-gold items or using shrines. This means that there are no equipment improvements, no additional damage is dealt, no way to reduce the damage taken, and almost every attack results in a game over.
To put this challenge in perspective, only 21 players have reported completing this challenge on their psnprofile. That's 21 people since 2015, when the game was released.
And how long did it take for a player to register as having managed to conquer what is generally accepted to be one of the most difficult trophies ever released in this medium? Just over a year. It's a long story, but like I said earlier, you can't underestimate trophy hunters.
