The upcoming fall semester at Franklin University will be the first with a new focus on game development.
The program, offered as part of the software engineering major, offers students a direct path to the rapidly growing career field of video game development, the university said in a statement.
The decision to offer intensive courses was made as a response to student interest and as a way to provide graduates with entry into a growing field. According to the university, game development is an interdisciplinary practice that includes programming, design, art, audio, user interface, and writing, making it ideal for liberal arts institutions as well as students seeking a variety of transferable skills. It's a target.
Franklin College's Game Development Intensive Facility was built in collaboration with Rize Education, with significant help from Unity Technologies, the maker of the most used video game engine. The program focuses on portfolio-building coursework and project-based learning, centered around real-world lessons learned from industry partners and studio directors. The university says the new program reflects the university's goal of ensuring students learn the knowledge, skills and tools most in demand in markets in Indiana and around the world.
“The development of this program preserves the skills best developed through a liberal arts education and moves them into high-demand fields while ensuring relevance in modern markets,” said Dean Christine Flora of the university. “It shows a desire to meet the interests of our students.” said in a statement.
This focus also connects directly to the university's digital fluency program, Flora said.
This new centralized facility is in part the result of a 2020 “Envisioning the Future of Indiana Universities” grant the university received from Lilly Endowment Inc. to support efforts to increase digital fluency among students and faculty. Part of the funding will be provided through.
