BAGHDAD — The Iraqi government has called on the United Nations to end a mission set up to promote governance and human rights reforms in the country by the end of 2025. This is the latest in a series of international organizations that Iraq operates within the country. Please relax.
A letter sent by Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani to UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Wednesday declared that there is “no need to continue” the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI).
Sudani said the Iraqi government “was able to achieve many important measures” in areas falling under the Iraqi government's mandate. Make it redundant.
The mandate is normally extended annually by the UN Security Council, with the current term ending at the end of this month.
Sudani's letter did not oppose a one-year extension, but said the mission should focus on finishing the mission to ensure permanent closure and transfer of responsibility by the end of 2025. .
Established in 2003 in the wake of the U.S. invasion that toppled longtime dictator Saddam Hussein, UNAMI fosters dialogue between different groups, supports electoral campaigns, monitors human rights, and provides assistance in conflict-affected areas. He was responsible for a number of tasks, including coordinating aid to the region.
A UNAMI spokesperson and a spokesperson for Sudani declined to comment on the Iraqi government's request.
The Sudani government has undertaken a series of moves to liberate Iraq from the presence of international organizations established since 2003.
Earlier this year, Iraq began talks to phase out the mission of the U.S.-led military coalition formed to fight Islamic State.
Baghdad also decided not to renew the mandate of the UN mission to promote accountability for crimes committed by ISIS and called for the mission to withdraw by September 2024.
