Famous zombie survival shooter DayZ is getting its first new expansion in nearly five years this fall. DayZ Frostline introduces you to the frigid New Sahar Islands, a vast 83 square mile map. This equates to approximately 32 square miles of frigid islands and volcanic peaks. The debut trailer and screenshots showcase industrial facilities, mines, pipelines, and oil derricks in a tundra environment. But those same shots are interspersed with steaming sulfur pools, volcanic cones, and rugged rocky coastlines.
The snowy, cold terrain is definitely a change from DayZ's default settings, and you should prepare to battle harsher climates and become a central theme in how Frostline is portrayed. Of course, there are also new creatures to hunt. The screenshots feature reindeer, arctic hares, and wolves. And I don't think zombies really care about the cold.
Or maybe they actually do. I don't get it: I never see the word zombie on the store page or announcements. I think Bohemia knows that the real threat in DayZ is always other players, not zombies.
“At the heart of the expansion is the terrain of Sahar, inviting you to explore a rugged and desolate region. Unlike any previous location, you will be a survivor seeking refuge in the rumored safety of Sahar. But in the end, both end up facing a frozen and unforgiving environment.''Despite the cruelty of time and climate, Sahar province is filled with frozen lakes, snow-covered forests, , promises beauty in every dangerous situation, including frozen mountains,” said developer Bohemia Interactive.
Frostline will be the first paid expansion for DayZ since DayZ's Livonia map released in 2019 to moderate reception and reviews. Livonia will be free as it will be integrated into the base game in his upcoming 1.25 patch. The move prompted a ton of negative reviews from players unhappy with having paid for an underpopulated and underrated map, and Bohemia's decision to promote the move as Frostline as DayZ's only DLC called it an ironic decision.
Still, from where I stand, it's hard to say it's unreasonable to release a second paid expansion on Steam in over a decade. That's about the same rate other studios are releasing full $60 games.
