ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Five classic video games have joined the newest class in the World Video Game Hall of Fame.
Asteroids, SimCity, Ultima, Resident Evil and Myst are the latest games introduced to the halls at the Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester.
This hall recognizes lasting contributions to the video game industry. Among the attendees at Thursday's event was Jeff Brown, whose company Maxis developed the Hall of Fame SimCity.
“I never expected that 35 years later I would be inducted into the Hall of Fame,” Brown said. “When we started this, there was no video game industry at all.
Longevity will be key for all five Hall of Fame classes in 2024, including the Ultima series of fantasy role-playing video games.
“The only video game that existed before my kind of experimentation and Ultima was actually Pong,” said Ultima creator Richard Garriott. “Things like Asteroids hadn’t even come out yet.”
The World Video Game Hall of Fame opened in 2015. It contains examples and collections of electronic games from the early days of the industry to the present day.
