“Video games are the most important medium of the 21st century,” said John Paul Dyson, Vice President of Exhibitions at The Strong. “Video games are bigger than movies in terms of sales, but even more so they influence the way we see the world, and how we experience the digital world.” And as video games enter their half-century, we want to pay homage to the most important games that changed not just video games, but the way we learn to play and experience the world itself. ”
The Strong currently houses over 70,000 video games and related artifacts, as well as hundreds of thousands more focused on how games are created.
“Places like The Strong are one of the few places in the world dedicated to documenting the very early formative years of game development,” said Richard Garriott, creator of Ultima.
Games were chosen based on their work in the video game industry, including iconic status, geographic scope, longevity, and influence.
“This was a labor of love. It was something we were all involved in,” said Jeff Brown, co-founder of Maxis, the video game developer that created SimCity. I was fine. And all the people involved were really good people. But I never expected something like this to happen 35 years later and I would be inducted into the Hall of Fame. ”
