The Texas women's tennis team overcame a rough road at Georgia Tech and several hours of rain delays to advance to the Round of 16 at UCLA with a win in the second round at the Texas Tennis Center on Sunday.
The No. 9 Longhorns (23-5) defeated No. 24 Georgia Tech (14-10) 4-3 to advance to the Sweet 16 for the fourth straight year. After earning doubles points with a win on the second-place line, senior Charlotte Chavatypon and sophomore Vivian Obrutsky, as well as first-place senior Malaika LaPoll and graduate Tanya Sasnowskaya, the Longhorns won by 3rd place Chavatypon, 4th place Sasnowskaya and 6th place Obrutsky, securing three singles matches.

The overall score of the match was even, 3-3, with Obrutski defeating Given Roach 4-6, 7-5, 6-1. Ofrutsky trailed 5-3 in the second set, but after weather delayed the match, he rallied to take a decisive victory.

“I was pretty frustrated because I wasn’t playing to the standard that I wanted. To be honest, I think we were actually lucky that we had a rain delay. It took me 20 minutes to mediate and calm myself down. Because of that,” Obrutsky said. “I said to myself, 'I've got to turn this around, not just for myself, but for the team,' and that's what I did. I think that really helped me because even if I didn't, I didn't care. I also gave a big shout out to the Texas men's tennis because they had such good energy. And it was really great to play in front of them.”
