Vietnam's police have arrested former government chief Mai Tien Dung on suspicion of abuse of power, the Ministry of Public Security announced on Saturday, as an anti-corruption crackdown expands in the Southeast Asian country.

Mr. Dung could not be reached for comment on the charges against him.
The crackdown, dubbed the “burning furnace,” began nearly a decade ago and has intensified in recent days, with hundreds of senior officials and prominent business executives facing charges or forced to resign.

Saturday's announcement did not provide details of Dung's alleged crimes, but state media reported that his arrest was related to a real estate project in Lam Dong province.
Mr. Dung served as the government secretary under then Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc from 2016 to 2021.
Phuc became Vietnam's president in April 2021, but resigned less than two years later, citing “violations and misconduct” by officials under his command.
