Eternal War (TBA)
Perhaps the best story to deal with space travel at relativistic speeds is that of Joe Haldeman. eternal war.Partly written in response to nationalists (and a little fascists) space warrior, the novel uses relativistic time dilation as a great metaphor for troops returning home during the Vietnam War. The film uses time dilation to depict returning home from battle and discovering the broader social changes that have occurred within the country, but there are also plenty of space wars. In short, this is perfect movie material.
Film rights to the book have changed hands since 1988. For a long time, there were plans to make the film into a 3D spectacle directed by Ridley Scott. Avatar (The film also featured space travel involving time dilation, but you'd have to read a lot of behind-the-scenes material to find out). However, the rights expired in 2015 and it was quickly snapped up by Warner Bros. with the intention of turning it into a Channing Tatum vehicle. The movie is said to be still in development, but like a spaceship traveling at near the speed of light, time moves slowly in development hell.
