New Delhi: Movement restrictions have now been imposed on Chinese nationals in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) region, according to a report in Dawn. The KP government requires Chinese citizens to be accompanied by armored vehicles when visiting the region.
The directions were announced by senior police officials during a meeting held on Wednesday. Deputy Inspector General of Hazara Range Police Tahir Ayub Khan said, “We are taking all measures for the safety of Chinese nationals, so Chinese nationals should not move within the province without armored vehicles as directed by the government.'' It shouldn't be done.”
The meeting was convened to address safety concerns at the Suki Kinari hydropower project in the Markandi district of the Kaghan Valley and brought together various stakeholders, including safety officials, Chinese engineers, and project managers. Ta. As Dawn reported, the discussion centered on implementing strict safety measures to protect the lives of individuals involved in critical infrastructure projects.
During the site visit to Sukhi Kinari and Balakot hydropower projects, DIG Tahir Ayub Khan reiterated the government's commitment to maintaining high safety standards. He highlighted plans to fortify the residential colony housing Chinese engineers and workers with a boundary wall at least 8 feet high and potentially reinforced with barbed wire for additional protection.
These enhanced security measures follow a recent incident in which a convoy of Chinese engineers working on the Dasu hydropower project in Shangla district was targeted by a suicide bomber, resulting in casualties. The attack raised serious security concerns, prompting authorities to take steps to reduce risks and ensure the safety of foreign nationals in Pakistan.
