The Federal Trade Commission has released new consumer advice warning travelers about potential travel scams ahead of this year's busy spring break and Easter holidays.
According to a Consumer Alert published on March 12, scammers are offering great deals, “free” trips with a fee, or very vague travel packages with limited details to lure people in right before spring break. may try to tempt travelers who are looking for ways to save on their trip. .
Either way, the FTC has some advice on how to stay vigilant and avoid being scammed this spring break travel season.
“Please do some research,” a warning appeared. “Search the name of your travel company or agency for the words 'scam,' 'reviews,' and 'complaints' to see what others are saying about it. Until you find specific details. Do not sign or pay for the hotel or resort. Ask for the exact address of the hotel or resort so you can look it up independently. Also, obtain a copy of the cancellation and return policy before signing or paying. please.”
The FTC also warns that a preferred payment method may indicate potential fraud and be wary of travel transactions that require another payment method instead of a credit card.
“Do not pay with wire transfers, gift cards, or cryptocurrency,” the FTC writes. “Dishonest travel package promoters asking you to pay in one of these ways is a sure sign of fraud.”
The FTC warns you against trusting any messages, robocalls, emails, or flyers you may receive offering free or incredibly low-cost vacations. Also, people who pressure travelers to make a travel decision right away or pay for a trip by mentioning “5-star hotels” or “luxury cruise ships” without providing details.
