Keeping track of all the latest video games being released is an increasingly complex task. Need to keep track of multiple PC storefronts, Xbox One, PS4, Switch, mobile, and more? Don't worry. I'll help you. . Every month, we'll be highlighting the most notable matches, from the big Triple-A headliners to the interesting indies that are often overlooked.
After a somewhat slow April, May warms things up a bit and brings the arrival of several big Senua's Saga exclusives, including Hellblade II and Paper Mario: The Thousand-year door, as well as the long-awaited Homeworld 3. Masu. The indie scene is also particularly busy in May, with the full version of V Rising and the atmospheric horror game Indika set to be released.
Note: I may have played demos or had early access to some of the games recommended in this article, but for the most part I'm just picking games that look promising. We cannot guarantee the final product. Please wait for reviews before purchasing!
That said, here are the games to watch in May…
The Headliners
Homeworld 3 (PC, May 13)
The game has suffered several delays and setbacks, but it looks like Homeworld 3 is finally coming this month. The game presents a big challenge, as the earlier entries in the series attracted a very passionate fan base, but Homeworld 3 offers the kind of stylish 3D strategic ship battles you've come to expect from the series. appears to be available on a larger scale. You can pre-order Homeworld 3 here.
Senua's Saga: Hellblade II (PC and Xbox Series X/S, May 21)
One of the first games announced for Xbox Series X/S is finally here. Senua's Saga: Hellblade II is faithful to the first game in many ways, as it appears to be a fairly linear cinematic adventure, but developer Ninja Theory has made some changes to the game's presentation. We invest a huge amount of time, money, and effort into it. If you're looking for something that packs the most amount of visual splendor per square inch, this is the game for you. You can pre-order Senua's Saga: Hellblade II here.
Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door (Switch, May 23)
Over the past few decades, Nintendo has doggedly tried to distance the Paper Mario series from its RPG roots, with a vocal fan base clamoring for a game more in the vein of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. . Well, Nintendo finally relented. Because the TTYD remake is coming soon. Based on my hands-on time, the New Millennium Door is a pretty conservative redo, but hey, it doesn't break anything. You can pre-order “Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door” here.
MultiVersus (PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4 & PS5, May 28th)
MultiVersus, a Smash Bros.-like crossover fighter featuring a variety of characters under the Warner Bros. Discovery banner, has had an unusual path to release. The game was released in early access beta and initially generated a lot of excitement, but its popularity waned and the game was no longer available. Now, the game is back with a bunch of improvements, including an upgrade to Unreal Engine 5, cross-play, netcode rollback, and more. And really, how many games are there where you can join Wonder Woman in defeating Shaggy from Scooby-Doo? MultiVersus is free to play.
promising indie
Indica (PC, May 2)
While movies often dramatize and sometimes scare religious themes, video games have largely avoided them. Indica takes on this sensitive subject and tells the story of a Russian nun who goes on a strange “journey of discovery” with the devil himself at her side. Featuring striking, truly cinematic visuals, Indika is the work of a small team formerly based in Moscow but now based in Kazakhstan, offering a truly unique perspective. It seems to be made from. Indika's Steam page is here.
V Rising (PC, May 8th, PS5 later in 2024)
V Rising, the Castlevania-flavored vampire survival RPG, has been in Early Access for a while and amassed a devoted following, but the release of version 1.0 is just around the corner. The game's full release promises visual upgrades, improvements to the entire world, and plenty of new endgame content. Even if fans were already hooked on EA's version of his V Rising, the full release should be worth checking out. This is the Steam page for V Rising.
Animal Well (PC, PS5, Switch, May 9th)
Animal Well may seem simple at first glance, and in some ways it is, but this pixelated metroidvania captures the mystical and immersive feel of well-loved classics like Cave Story. It seems to express it better than the work of . Filled with strange creatures, secrets, and objects you can interact with in unexpected ways, Animal Well's caves are well worth wandering into. Animal Well's Steam page is here.
Nine Sols (PC, May 29)
Nine Sols is the latest game from Red Candle Games, the Taiwanese studio behind well-received artistic horror games like Detention and Devotion. You may remember Devotion as the controversial game that was removed from Steam after overt references to Chinese leader Xi Jinping were found in the game. Thankfully, Red Candle has largely managed to put that controversy to rest, and their new game, Nine Sols, is quite different from their previous titles, being more of a stylish 2D action platformer than a horror game. Masu. Despite changing genres, high-quality Red Candles are known for maintaining their looks. Click here for Nine Sols' Steam page.
