Jacksonville, Florida – As travelers prepare for spring break activities, the Transportation Security Administration wants to remind travelers of what they can and cannot bring to airport security checkpoints.
TSA expects spring break travel to increase by 6% nationwide this year, and travel from Jacksonville to increase by 8%.
Officials at Jacksonville International Airport demonstrated some of the most commonly surrendered items Tuesday, including sunscreen, hair products and household food.
Other seized items included weapons such as knives, firearms and even grenades.
The TSA reminds travelers that they may carry firearms, but they must be properly stored in a suitcase and checked in at the ticket counter. Failure to do so may result in hefty fines.
“Failure to do so will result in law enforcement intervention and over $15,000 in fines from the TSA. It's a very costly but avoidable mistake. To give you numbers, last year… A total of 74 firearms have been seized at security checkpoints here, 10 so far this year,” said Mark Howell, TSA regional spokesperson.
So when you travel, remember the 3-1-1 rule.
Liquids containing sunscreen must be 3 ounces or less and placed in 1-quart bags, one per person.
We also recommend arriving early to allow enough time to find parking and go through security.
