Last week, we welcomed Michael Tapia, Chief Technology Director of Clint ISD, Texas, and Kobe Brummett, Cybersecurity Technician, Hawkins School District, Tennessee, to a live webinar.
Michael and Kobe volunteered to share with other K-12 technology professionals how important cybersecurity and safety monitoring is to Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, and online browsing.
We also shared some use cases about how we specifically use ManagedMethods' Cloud Monitor platform to help with automation. Stay tuned as we share each use case on the ManagedMethods blog in the coming weeks. You can watch the entire webinar recording here.
Human error and lack of cybersecurity awareness are increasing cybersecurity threats to K-12 school districts. Route Fifty shares that only 10% of educators understand cybersecurity, and most students have minimal or no knowledge about cybersecurity. Additionally, researchers from Stanford University and top cybersecurity organizations found that approximately 88% of all data breaches are caused by employees.
To share his experience with user education, Michael Tapia highlighted how the implementation of Cloud Monitor has led to significant changes in the district's handling of sensitive data, particularly in the special education sector.
“When we first turned on Cloud Monitor, the platform alerted us to the fact that special education departments were inappropriately sharing IEP, student, and health data left and right. We discussed and decided to reconsider the district's policies and expectations for data sharing and data protection for students and parents. This has changed the way the department operates.”
Rather than panic, Michael saw this as an opportunity for his team to work with the special education department. Together they reviewed the district's cybersecurity policy and educated the department on student data privacy. This collaboration has deepened the department's understanding of cyber hygiene and significantly improved its handling of sensitive data.
I would like to give a special “thank you” to Michael and Kobe for sharing their time and expertise. Valuable insights into how technology teams in other school districts can improve cybersecurity and student safety with Google Workspace and Microsoft 365. It will definitely help you keep it.
