SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Travelers have received news that may make future trips less stressful.
The new federal rules apply regardless of which airline a traveler flies. If your flight is canceled or “substantially” delayed and you are denied a travel credit or alternative transportation, you will receive a refund. Significant delays mean delays of more than 3 hours for domestic flights and 6 hours or more for international flights. Additionally, refunds must be made in cash. Alternatively, you must promptly refund the amount in full, regardless of the original method of payment.
“In theory, in the event of a cancellation or significant delay, passengers should already be reimbursed,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said Wednesday at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Virginia. Stated. “In practice, it often doesn't work out that way. Time and again we hear from passengers how much effort they have to try to get a refund.”
Plus, if travelers are dealing with the headache of filing a baggage mishandling report, get a refund on checked baggage fees if your baggage isn't delivered within 12 hours of arriving at your domestic gate. I can. For international flights, it takes about 15 to 30 hours.
All of this is welcome news for Josh Masin of Mesa, Ariz., who flew into Sioux Falls on Friday.
“I think that's pretty good,” he said. “So all kinds of flights are delayed.”
If you lose your bag, your toothbrush might be in another city. Or you could end up with a more problematic situation, as the machine knows.
“Actually, my wife and I got married recently, but when my parents flew overseas, my mother's luggage was delayed,” Masin said. “So it was delayed for a very long time because it had her dress and stuff like that in it. So I think in a situation like this it's pretty good to get some compensation.”
new rules Do not take effect immediately. This will happen over the next two years.
