Guy Ritchie's stylish gangster series gentlemen ' has topped the Netflix TV charts, and it's not hard to see why. The show combines sophisticated storytelling, engaging performances, and Ritchie's signature blend of crime and comedy to entertaining effect.
A spin-off of the 2019 film of the same name. gentlemen Edward Horniman (Theo James), a former military man, unexpectedly inherits his family's vast fortune and the title of Duke of Halstead upon the death of his father. However, Edward soon discovers that his new position has unpleasant connections. It's the Glass family, a criminal kingpin who runs a marijuana empire out of the premises of his estate. As Edward tries to rescue himself and his family from the underworld, he falls deeper into the world of gangsters.
Edward partners up with Susie Glass (Kaya Scodelario), who heads a crime syndicate while her father Bobby (Ray Winstone) is in prison. Edward wants to renegotiate Grass's presence on his land, but when he learns that his clumsy brother Freddie (Daniel Ings) owes the mob £8 million, he decides to help them. Realize that you have to rely on connections.
Edward and Susie secure funds to save Freddy, but things go awry when the paralyzed Freddy murders a gang leader. This is the beginning of a cover-up, but it is only the beginning of Edward's descent into the world of crime.
Where I was looking gentlemenI felt a sense of kinship. The series borrows heavily from Ritchie's past works. snatch and Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels, featuring a diverse cast of traveling crime families and criminals. Ritchie MVP Vinnie Jones is also on board as the estate's groundskeeper.
But what struck me most about this series were its similarities to another epic crime story from Rockstar Games. grand theft auto franchise. If you were living under a rock, GTA's open-world gameplay allows players to take on the role of a criminal climbing the organized crime ladder. Players are given missions by criminal kingpins, gangsters, and various underworld figures, which become more complex as the game progresses.
That's essentially what's happening throughout gentlemenIn the first season of: Edward has to complete a series of criminal missions, from drug smuggling to money laundering to murder to secure profits. This series even mimics that feeling. GTAIn a cutscene, a flamboyant criminal explains what he wants Eddie to accomplish in order to achieve his goal. It's amazing that no one has asked Guy Ritchie to adapt a video game into a movie at this stage in his career.if GTA He would be an exciting choice as a director if he ever makes it to the big screen.
This comparison is in no way meant to negate this series. As a fan of both gentlemen and GTA, I think this structure works effectively in both franchises. All I need now is a backwards shot of Theo James saying, “Hey, here we go again.”
