No. 22 West Virginia Baseball lost 15-2 to the Texas Tech Red Raiders in the series opener Friday night at Dan Roan Field at Rip Griffin Park in Lubbock, Texas.
Junior infielder JJ Weatherholt started at bat for the Mountaineers, but West Virginia struck out in the top of the first inning and was unable to score.
In the bottom of the first inning, junior right-handed pitcher Aidan Major took the mound for West Virginia, and the Red Raiders led 2-0 at the end of the inning.
The Mountaineers had a double in the top of the second inning, but were unable to force it home and score.
Texas Tech maintained its lead in the bottom of the third inning with four hits and four runs.
In the top of the fourth inning, junior infielder Kyle West singled, marking West Virginia's first hit of the game.
Freshman right-handed pitcher Chase Meyer relieved the majors with 3.1 innings and five strikeouts.
Although the Mountaineers loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth inning, they were unable to score beyond home plate and struggled offensively.
In the top of the sixth inning, senior infielder Reed Chumley got his second hit of the night. West also hit a home run soon after, and West Virginia scored its first two runs to make the score 7-2.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Austin Green of the Red Raiders hit a grand slam, increasing the Red Raiders' lead to 11-2.
Sophomore right-handed pitcher Luke Lyman relieved Meyer in the seventh inning. In the bottom of the 8th inning, redshirt sophomore Tommy Beane came in relief.
The Mountaineers lost the series opener to the Texas Tech Red Raiders 15-2 in nine innings. WVU continues its series on Saturday, April 20th at 3 p.m. The game will be broadcast and available for streaming on ESPN+.
