Louis Kiefer's new book, Around the World with Uncle Doc 1931-1932, is now available from Rosedog Books.
This is a diary typed by Kerbü Melam 'Doc' Ehren during his trip around the world from October 1931 to March 1932.
“Doc,” as everyone called him, was born on December 19, 1898 in Genesee, Idaho, to Dr. William Hamilton Ehlen and Belle (McGregor) Ehlen. He was a World War I veteran who served in the Royal Canadian Air Force and later became an inventor and investor in Boise, Idaho, where he met and married Theresa L. Stone. Doc passed away on September 11, 1980 in Boise.
Teresa and Doc were deeply involved in the arts and humanities, hosting many nationally known musical artists, supporting the Philharmonic Orchestra, and participating in philanthropic programs.
In 1929, Doc decided to see the world, and after much preparation, in 1931 he took a ship from Seattle, Washington, with a Remington typewriter and a Graflex camera to Japan, and then went on to China, Hong Kong, Shanghai, and more. We headed to Singapore, Batavia, and Bali. , Vietnam, Cambodia, Calcutta, Ceylon, South Korea, Philippines, India, Pakistan, Thailand, Egypt, Greece, and Italy.
The diary contained the complete itinerary and travel expenses, and nothing else was entered between the time he left Greece and the time he quit his typewriter (perhaps he quit his typewriter!).
Compiled by his nephew Louis Kiefer, Doc narrates this document as if the reader were present and his companion on the journey.
