STORRS, Conn. — The University of Connecticut has received federal funding for a new cybersecurity program scheduled to begin in May.

“You know, I'm really happy to know that this effort is underway,” said Junbo Zhao, a professor in the Department of Engineering Innovation in the UW's School of Electrical and Computer Engineering and director of the new Center for Cybersecurity. Stated.

Northeast University's Cybersecurity Center for Advanced and Resilient Energy Deliveries (CyberCARED) will receive funding over the next two years from the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Cybersecurity, Energy Security, and Emergency Response .
The goal is to address gaps in energy security research and provide cybersecurity education programs.
“In the renewable energy sector, the emergence of many new devices with the new digitalization of communications poses great challenges for the region,” Zhao said. “To do that, we really need to educate people.”

UConn partners with five other universities in the region (University of Rhode Island, University of Massachusetts Lowell, University of Vermont, Central Connecticut State University, New York University) and industry partners including Eversource and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory intend to do something. , Raytheon Technologies Research Center and Gridmetrics.
“You won't like it, let's start from scratch,” Zhao continued. “Really, we're going to bring experts together to create a great platform.”
CyberCARED will be based at UConn's Eversource Energy Center in the Innovation Partnership building on the Storrs campus.

The program develops curricula and courses and offers certifications and, ultimately, majors for students and industry professionals.
“We have almost 20+ industry members participating, so this is a huge initiative, and they even come to me and say, 'Hey, what do you think about this initiative? Can I join? ” said Mr. Zhao. “They are very interested in learning more and how they can work with us.”
