ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — River Flow Soccer Club is a 100% volunteer-based nonprofit organization. Vice President Jim Herman said places like Total Sports Experience are essential to keeping kids active in the rain, snow and frigid temperatures.
“Especially in the winter, you can be indoors and outdoors, and when you come here and get this artificial turf, you get the feel of grass. Whereas in Western New York, we tend to have a lot of snow on the ground. “Snow is temporary, but it's a reminder that we can get outside soon,” Herman said.
He says little reminders are important because as the weather gets warmer and more kids get outside, they'll be able to stretch out.
“Friday, we're here at TSE, and it's small. Because the space is small, we have our 9-, 10-, and 11-year-old kids practicing on this field at the same time. So we can go outside and… “Everyone wins because it spreads out when you get some fresh air, you don't run into each other, and it's Rochester weather so I hope it doesn't snow,” he said.
He says a balance between indoors and outdoors is also important for mental health.
“In fact, this is a great way to get kids to understand what it feels like to be outdoors and understand that it's not just everything within six feet around them,” he said.
