Last weekend, a broadcasting pioneer retired. We celebrate Karen Kornacki and look back at her incredible 41-year career at KMBC 9. When Karen joined her company in 1983, there were only a few women in sports journalism. Since then, many women have followed her path and made their way into fields once dominated by men. The subject matter of sports coverage has also changed, putting more female athletes in the spotlight, and rightly so. This year has seen record TV viewership, corporate investment and a growing fan base for women's sports. In the NCAA Basketball Tournament, the women's team was overshadowed by the men's team. Seeing big crowds for superstars like Iowa's Caitlin Clark, some WNBA franchises are moving to venues with even more seating capacity. Of course, it's not just one sport. Our KC Currents are attracting national attention this season as well. We believe that what we are witnessing is not a flash in the pan, but the foundation of a reshaped sports world with women at the top.
