Spring is right around the corner, and many students across the state are taking a much-needed week off from classes. In the metropolitan areas alone, students in Ankeny, Des Moines, Johnston, Southeast Polk, Urbandale, Waukee, and West Des Moines, among others, will all enjoy their weeklong vacation. However, not many people take vacations. According to a survey conducted by AAA earlier this year, only 22% of Iowa families are planning a spring break trip. Greg Edwards, president and CEO of Catch Des Moines, said Iowa has a lot to offer that draws people to the Hawkeye State. “There's a lot of it. Des Moines is getting people's attention, too.” “People who live around Iowa come to the big cities, the capital.” One such event, he said, was the Great Train Show, held this weekend at the Iowa Event Center. One of his participants on the show, Mr. David Reinhold, was a participant on the show in the beginning. He has been interested in trains since childhood. He says the show allows him to pass on his and his father's love to his children. “When he passed away, I took over everything from him. So I just came out here. I'm trying my best. “I joined to get my kids involved, and they really They look like they’re having fun,” Reinhold said. The Iowa Science Center is also open this week and we're taking advantage of that. Timitra and Colin Kelly said they enjoy the visit from their home in Minnesota. Timitra Kelly says, “At home we get back to our usual routines, and away from home allows us to explore and reconnect. We love just talking about memories and making new ones at the same time.'' It was fun,” he said.Get updates on the go with the free KCCI app: Apple | Google Play Get the latest headlines from KCCI
Spring is right around the corner, and many students across the state are taking a much-needed break from classes this week.
In the metropolitan area alone, students from Ankeny, Des Moines, Johnston, Southeast Polk, Urbandale, Waukee, and West Des Moines will all enjoy a weeklong vacation.
However, not many people take vacations.
A survey conducted by AAA earlier this year found that only 22% of Iowa families are planning a spring break trip.
Greg Edwards, president and CEO of Catch Des Moines, said Iowa has a lot to offer that draws people to the Hawkeye State.
“There are so many other places to go and see. Des Moines is also on people's radar,” he said. “People who live around Iowa come to the big city, the capital.”
One such event was the Great Train Show held at the Iowa Event Center over the weekend.
One of the show's participants, David Reinhold, first became interested in trains at a young age.
He said the show helps him pass on his and his father's love to his children.
“He is [my father] He passed away, so I inherited everything from him. So I just came out here. I try to get the kids involved and they seem to really enjoy it,” Reinhold said.
The Iowa Science Center is also benefiting by staying open this week.
Timitra and Colin Kelly said they enjoyed the visit from their home in Minnesota.
Timitra Kelly says, “When you're at home, you're stuck in a routine, but being away allows you to explore and reconnect. We talk about memories and create new ones at the same time.'' It was a lot of fun just doing that.”
