Raised in Northern California, Lou Mapp grew up enjoying the great outdoors with her family. She recognized the market gap between the Black community and the outdoor industry, so she founded Outdoor Afro, Inc. in 2021 to fill that gap.
The organization is now back in its third year of partnership with REI Co-op, which includes the debut of three guided trips organized by Black outdoor enthusiasts.
“This collaboration aims to deliver unforgettable experiences through thoughtfully curated itineraries, so there will be something for everyone,” Mapp said in a shared statement. travel + leisure. “You will have the opportunity to explore, reconnect and enjoy a rich cultural experience that celebrates Black joy in nature.”
All itineraries are small group trips lasting four days, jointly led by guides from both organizations.
For those looking for a peaceful outdoor experience, Shenandoah and DC Hike and Kayak, with one night in a hotel and two nights in a historic lodge, is rated “Easy and Active.” Your trip begins in Washington, DC, with a tour of Old Town Alexandria's black history, followed by a kayak ride on the Potomac River. Then, travelers venture into the Shenandoah Valley and enjoy a hike to White Oak Canyon, including viewing waterfalls and exploring caves. Tastings at Black-owned vineyards and discussions about the region's divided history will also be on the agenda. Those looking for a little more adventure can choose the Shenandoah Hiking and Camping Adventure. This is a “moderately active” trip that includes a hike to Hawksbill Summit, the highest point in Shenandoah National Park, and its iconic peak, Old Rag, as well as kayaking on the Shenandoah River. river.
