Michael Gallup won't be playing for the Dallas Cowboys in 2024. According to the Dallas Morning News, the team has given Gallup permission to seek a trade partner ahead of the start of the free agency season. If the Cowboys can't find a trade partner, there's a good chance Wilson will be released. However, the team reportedly expects the veteran to be released by Dallas.
Trading Gallup was discussed by Cowboys leadership before last year's deadline, but nothing ultimately happened. Those negotiations then accelerated to the point where Gallup received permission to proceed with the deal.
The reason the Cowboys are parting ways with Gallup, who turned 28 on March 4, is money. As of Sunday morning, Dallas had just over $2.2 million in cap space, according to Over the Cap. Gallup currently carries a cap hit of $13.85 million.
Gallup should also be interested. Gallup should have multiple teams interested, but Gallup will have to adjust his salary. For example, the Steelers just released Allen Robinson II, and the Bengals have no plans to re-sign veteran Tyler Boyd.
Gallup spent his first six NFL seasons with the Cowboys, catching 266 yards, 3,744 yards and 21 touchdowns. Last season, he caught 34 of 57 targets for 418 yards and two touchdowns. Gallup's best season was 2019, when he caught 66 passes for 1,107 yards and six touchdowns.
His departure also means the Cowboys In the market for a new wideout. Dallas is expected to add to its receiving corps during free agency and the draft period in April.
