A Beehive Bash is held on the weekends.
For the first time in Utah, a day will be dedicated solely to highlighting the Beehive State's women's sports programs.
Six teams will gather at Highland High School on Saturday to play three different sports to highlight the diverse programs offered to women and non-binary people in Utah. The team plays rugby, ultimate frisbee, and football.
The Salt City Slugs, Boulder Babes, and Utah Vipers are local rugby teams that compete in USA Club Women's Rugby Divisions 1 and 2. Members of the Provo Peaks rugby team and members of BYU's extramural teams also play.
The Utah Wild will be playing Ultimate Frisbee and the Utah Falcons will be playing football.
“These players and the sport are often overlooked,” Falcons captain and starting safety Kim Klinke said in a statement. “But what we've noticed over and over again is that when people touch our team, they learn who we are, what we do, and especially what's going on on the field. It means being obsessed with it.”
The event is another attempt to move Salt Lake City officials to convert the stadium area currently occupied by the Salt Lake Bees into a sports complex dedicated to professional and semi-professional women's sports in Utah. Her proposal, called She Plays Here, was one of three winners of last year's design contest.
Tickets for the event are $20 when purchased through the Utah Falcons or Utah Wild websites. It's $25 at the gate. Falcons and Wild season ticket holders and their children under the age of 12 get free admission.
“We're stronger together,” Utah Wild captain Kendra Miller said. “And that's saying something, because to be honest, we're pretty strong on our own. These teams have to fight hard to have a chance to play at the highest level of the sport in this state. It's made up of players who didn't. It'll be an inspiration to see them all play on the same field.”
