Brackettville, Texas — A beloved science teacher took her students on a magical bus adventure.
No, I'm not talking about Mr. Frizzle.
Corianne Flores, a local science teacher at St. James Episcopal School, led 36 middle school students on a field trip to Brackettville, Texas, to secure a front-row seat to Monday's total solar eclipse. I went there and tried my best.
“Safe travels, speedy travels, and please remove the clouds.”
The morning began with a prayer from St. James School Principal Galen Holfstad as he sent a group of 36 middle school students off to see the Great American Solar Eclipse in 2024, four hours away.
This trip would not have been possible without Mr. Flores.
“I really have to go see this solar eclipse, but I also want to tell my children about it, so I thought, what can I do?” she said.
Why is your nose stuck in a book when your eyes are in the sky?
“This is a premier scientific laboratory,” Flores said. “Seeing it actually happen here in nature is better than what you can do in a classroom.”
The science teacher told 3NEWS that the charter bus was donated by one of the students' grandparents and made the caravan from Corpus Christi to the Path to Wholeness possible. This is an experience that teens will be talking about for years to come.
“It's a good memory to look back on. Just remembering that I was with everyone during the first solar eclipse, like in the future during the next solar eclipse,” said student Jazzy Briseno.
Flores explained how these classmates have a strong bond because they have been attending school together for years.
“Next time something like this happens, when we're 34 or 33, maybe we can meet and watch it together,” said student Elizabeth Gilley.
Until then, the middle school students were living in the present, counting down to 1:28 p.m., when the sky around them darkened and they witnessed a total solar eclipse.
They probably won't forget this moment anytime soon.
