It's no secret that flying can be stressful, but for many, it's the most convenient and fastest way to get from point A to point B (for us, of course, point B was Orlando International (often at an airport).
From dealing with travel delays to cancellations and lost luggage, there are many things that can go wrong. but, A DFB team member recently had a nightmare on a trip. And I wanted to share this story in case you have to deal with something similar.
This happened last year at the Detroit airport. Rain overnight caused some roads and tunnels at the airport to flood. Transportation to the entire Delta Air Lines terminal was closed., and we were stuck in another terminal, and yes, we had a Delta flight booked. So we were stuck inside the terminal with many other travelers trying to figure out how to get to our destination.
Delta Air Lines was not very cooperative in this situation, essentially telling passengers stranded in other terminals that there wasn't much the airline could do in the situation. I couldn't make it to the Delta terminal and ended up missing my first flight. Note that there was an inter-airport bus service, but the wait time was several hours. I was trying to rebook my Delta Airlines ticket, but something went wrong. Eventually, we were able to get help from Southwest Airlines and finally get a flight to our destination. But it was a long day at the airport, to say the least.
I also requested a refund from Delta for my first flight and had to rebook my flight, which was canceled because I missed my original flight. It was incredibly frustrating, to say the least. Delta did not cover Southwest's costs, but the Delta ticket was refunded.
So what should you do if this happens? beginning, Paying attention to the weather may help, especially if you know there may be problems at the airport. Flooding on airport roads is not something you can really prepare for, but if you know if severe weather is impacting your airport, you can call your airline ahead of time and let them know what's going on. And you can see what kind of impact it has.
We also recommend that you always: Book flights with a credit card that includes travel protection — If you're stranded overnight, if this happens and the airline can't or won't help you, you can often get a refund to rebook your hotel or flight. If you don't have that, it's also a good idea to purchase travel insurance in case of such strange occurrences. Also, don't hesitate to hold the airline accountable for things like this, even if they are outside of the airline's control.
We're not going to surprise you, as things like this rarely happen, but it's always a good idea to be prepared for your trip to go wrong in some way.
