From Bill Shakin: Officials in yellow windbreakers scrambled to the right-field pavilion. The ball arced high and deep into the pavilion. Shohei Ohtani hit his first home run as a Dodger, and Team Yellow Windbreaker was tasked with securing the ball for the milestone.
After eight games without a home run on two continents, the $700 million man who led the American League in home runs last year hit his first home run Wednesday in the seventh inning in his 37th at-bat of the season. . Not that Los Angeles was worried, but Miguel Rojas hit his second home run of the season early in the game.
A 430-foot home run from the designated slugger and a home run from the light-hitting shortstop highlighted the Dodgers' 5-4 victory over the San Francisco Giants.
Team Yellow Windbreakers handed the fan that caught Ohtani's home run to Ohtani himself, and Ohtani happily exchanged a bat, ball, and two caps, and had a few minutes of conversation with the fan, saying he was “very They exchanged what they called a special ball.
The adjective everyone in the Dodgers clubhouse used to describe Ohtani was “relieved.” Rojas used it. Used by director Dave Roberts. Otani himself also used it.
“Honestly, I was very relieved to hit my first home run,” he said through translator Will Ireton. “Long time, no see.”

lakers
From Dan Wojke: The challenge was more mental than anything else, the Lakers said. Six games were played in nine days, including against the league's worst team, ending with Wednesday's game against the Wizards.
“With all due respect, those are the teams we should beat,” D'Angelo Russell said the night before.
Exhausted from the journey from Milwaukee to Memphis to Indiana to Brooklyn to Toronto to Washington, D.C., the Lakers needed to find some last-minute fuel to make it all the way.
After watching a 17-point lead shrink to just two points in the fourth quarter, LeBron James made sure his offense didn't fall flat any further. He attacked the Wizards zone. He soared with a two-handed dunk, sparking a run that gave the Lakers a 125-120 victory and a 5-1 win on their season-ending road trip.

On Wednesday, the Angels defeated Miami 10-2, winning their fourth straight game as Taylor Ward hit a home run and Nolan Chanuel extended his career on-base streak to 35 games.
Angels starter Patrick Sandoval had seven strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings, overcoming an opener in which he allowed five runs in 1 2/3 innings. Sandoval (1-1) held Miami to two runs and four hits. The left-hander took a 161.9 mph reverse hit by Miami's Vidal Bourjan into his left leg in the third inning, but remained in the game.
“I felt a lot better about that. When we kept the ball in the zone, good things happened,” Sandoval said. “We just have to build on that. We've got to keep doing this.”

horse racing
From John Cherwa: Is there a chance that Bob Baffert will enter at least one horse in this year's Kentucky Derby? Perhaps it will all come down to a judge in the Circuit Court of Jefferson County, Kentucky.
On Wednesday, Amr Zedan, one of Baffert's biggest clients, asked for a temporary restraining order that would allow Zedan and other horses trained by Baffert to run in the May 4 Kentucky Derby. The lawsuit was filed in Louisville. Mr. Baffert is not a party to the lawsuit. In a largely procedural move, the motion is expected to be filed Monday afternoon.
All previous lawsuits against Baffert and his horse owners are on the merits of the case against Medina Spirit, who won the 2021 Kentucky Derby until he tested positive for a legal drug that wasn't legal on race day. It was getting worse. Churchill Downs has suspended Baffert from all Churchill tracks for an estimated two years. But Churchill Downs added at least another year to Baffert's suspension, even though he had no violations during those two years. CDI said the Hall of Fame trainer did not show sufficient contrition.
