Demolition crews tore apart the old high school stadium Wednesday.
The North York site will be the future home of a new state-of-the-art regional indoor sports centre.
The first to be knocked down was the bleachers at the former high school. Next comes the concession stand, followed by the dugout.
A groundbreaking ceremony is expected to be held at the site sometime this summer.
“We want York County to be proud to have a state-of-the-art fitness event center available to local residents,” said developer Jeff Inch of Inch & Company.
The facility will include turf fields for football, lacrosse, baseball, soccer and field hockey.
It will also house 16 volleyball courts, eight basketball courts, pickleball courts and tennis courts.
The center is expected to boost the tourism economy.
“Any type of Class A facility that can be built as a tourist attraction or an armory would be a real benefit to York County,” said Kevin Schreiber of the York County Economic Alliance.
The developer said the complex is expected to generate nearly $2 million in annual tax revenue. He also said the complex will have an annual economic impact of $19 million for York County.
The project is expected to be completed in late 2025 or early 2026.
