According to a recent report from American Express, solo travel is trending, with 69% of survey respondents planning to travel solo in 2024. No wonder. When you travel the world alone, you don't have to juggle other people's schedules. Or preference. You can go where you want, when you want, and when you arrive at your destination, choose activities according to your heart. Traveling solo is a great way to meet new people, relax, and explore hobbies (think cooking classes in the South of France or health-focused destinations).
But of course, if you're trying to plan a trip alone, there are a number of factors to consider, such as ease of transportation (because getting lost alone can be stressful); factors must be considered. It's fun to explore and relax alone at a destination. With all this in mind, here are five of the best places for solo travel and why we think these destinations are right for you.
1. Dublin, Ireland
If you love history and literature, love a drink in a pub, and want to explore cities in other countries that are rich in culture, then Dublin is a great option. It's a safe and walkable city, with easy access to public transport if you're leaving the city center, and friendly residents. Ireland's capital city is rich in culture with museums, galleries and music. It's a good idea to bring a rain slicker, but drizzle leads to lush parks.
Why I chose Dublin for my solo trip
- Ease of access: Direct flights from New York City to Dublin take less than 7 hours. When you arrive in Dublin from the airport, most tourist attractions are located in the city center, so unless you want to take a day trip or explore more remote parts of the city, you won't need a car or public transport. It's okay too.
- safety: Of course, Dublin is a city, so you'll need to take standard safety precautions, such as being careful about pickpockets and avoiding going to deserted areas. But overall, the U.S. State Department has issued a Level 1 travel advisory for Ireland, indicating that travelers just need to take normal precautions. The country ranks third in the Institute for Economics and Peace's 2023 World Peace Index.
2. Tokyo, Japan
Let's count the reasons to travel to Tokyo alone. It's very safe, you can visit places that are very likely different from home, and many hotels and restaurants are private. For example, hotels also have rooms for solo travelers, and in restaurants it is common to sit alone at a counter or table. Plus, there's a lot to do. Just riding the world-famous rail system is an adventure. Additionally, there are many spots to explore, including cherry blossoms, fish markets, hot springs, and temples.
Why I chose Tokyo as a solo travel destination
- language: If you can't speak Japanese, the thought of going to Tokyo may feel scary. While it is true that many residents do not speak English fluently, many people can communicate in English to some degree, and thanks to technology such as smartphone translation apps, the language barrier is not as difficult. The capital is also a large tourist destination, so English signage and photos of food on menus are also common. Aim to learn basic polite words and phrases before you go.
- safety: The U.S. travel advisory for Japan is at the lowest level, with visitors advised to take normal precautions.
- Perfect for female travelers: Japan has a low crime rate. If you're a woman traveling alone, know that women-only vehicles operate in Tokyo during peak travel times and are usually safe and comfortable to roam around. That said, foreigners may attract unwanted attention, so be careful, especially late at night.
3. Reykjavik, Iceland
If you're lucky, you'll probably see the Northern Lights when you visit Reykjavik. But even if those colorful rays don't appear in the sky, there's plenty to see and do, including geothermal spas, museums, a vibrant music scene, and places to eat and shop. Many of the main attractions are within walking distance, but taxis are also easily available. It's also easy to get around by renting a car or bicycle. Iceland itself is easy to get to. Flights are generally affordable and the flight time from New York is approximately 6 hours.
Why I chose Reykjavik as a solo travel destination
- Traveler friendliness: Tourism is a major part of Iceland's economy, so the people of Reykjavík are used to tourists. But this is more than just transactional friendliness. You can expect warmth, smiles, and kindness from the residents you meet. Additionally, Iceland is the #1 country in the 2023 World Peace Index.
- LGBTQIA+ friendly: Iceland is considered a tolerant and welcoming country for the LGBTQIA+ community. Reykjavik's annual Pride event draws over 100,000 people, and outside of that event, Reykjavik has a thriving LGBTQIA+ culture.
